SPECIES
There is no one log species that is the best for log homes. If there was, every
log home manufacturer would be using the same one. However, we use only
southern yellow pine (also known as Carolina pine) primarily because it grows
indigenously to our manufacturer in Kannapolis, North Carolina and it is one
of the strongest structural timbers in the world.
Other positive characteristics of southern yellow pine.
*Beautifies as it ages
*Moderately hard, stiff, strong and shock resistant
*Moderately stable in service and decay resistant
*Holds fasteners well
*Little shrinkage and movement in service
*Works well with applications requiring hardness and good wearing qualities
*Known for deep and even penetration of stains and chemical preservatives
SIZE and PROFILE
Our logs are uniform precision cut to an 8x6 size with profile options of
round on both sides or flat on one side and round on the other. The surfaces
of the logs are smooth. However, we also offer a cosmetic feature of notching
the round side of the log to give it a more rustic look. We call it the
"Yesteryear Look".
CORNERS
On our pre-cut kits we use an innovative "weather-lok" system. The corners
are interlocking by way of a routed cut at the ends; maximising strength and
protection from weather. As each course of logs are laid, a butt and pass
appearance is achieved at the corners.
On our pre-assembled kits, the corners are true butt and pass due to assembly
method.
